Previous Events
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, he was directing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.
During his tenure, the director caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.
Ongoing Accusations
The federal government claim the former director lied to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not permitted a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to journalistic entities data about the FBI investigations.
Prosecutors also charge the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, hinder and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.
Public Statements
Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and alleged the former president of behaving like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have been aware for years that there are consequences to opposing Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."
The accusations against the former director emerged after Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and others.
