{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to replace his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just dash across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the governing body
"During the third lap, track officials were alerted and made ready to access the circuit and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
