Courageous Train Staff Member Receives Critical Injuries During Multiple Knife Attack on Express Train

A valiant train employee who stepped in to save passengers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has suffered life-threatening injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Frightening Event

Surveillance video allegedly shows the employee trying to stop the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured victims running through compartments.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Crisis Reaction and Aftermath

The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several people have since been released from medical care.

A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced police on the station. He was allegedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."

“This terrible incident has affected many people. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the brave employee of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by specialist officers,” said a high-ranking police officer.

Union Reaction and Appeals for Action

Train unions were quick to praise staff and call for more action. A union leader stated he would be “requesting urgent discussions with authorities, train companies and police to guarantee that we have the strongest available support, tools and effective procedures in place”.

A different association representative urged the train operator and government “to act swiftly to examine safety, to support the impacted employees, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.

Driver Praised for Rapid Action

The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“The driver didn’t stop the train in the center of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he carried on traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” explained a association official.

Additional Information

Police said they received the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness recounted initially thinking if the situation was a holiday joke, but soon realized from individuals' expressions that it was real.

Police have stated there is nothing to suggest the event was a terrorist attack and have requested the public to come forward with any additional information.

Train operations on the impacted route are expected to experience disruption until Monday, with travelers advised to defer their journeys where possible.

Anyone with information that could help the inquiry are encouraged to reach authorities by texting a designated number with a case code.
