2026 Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is partially evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming appears uniquely powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.
Several the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year yet.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
